Organic cleansing balms are like little miracle products that can be used in so many ways making them the perfect gateway product into a low-tox organic lifestyle. Did you know this one product can be used as a moisturizer, cuticle balm, lip balm, makeup remover, and more?!? Plus it’s simply the best at removing makeup without having to tug on your face leading to premature aging and sagging. Not to mention, it can bind and remove aging free-radicals from your skin!

It’s extremely important to use an organic cleansing balm made with USDA certified organic oils, which you can read all about in my previous blog post, but there are only 2 brands that I could find which don’t contain fragrance or isolated fragrance chemicals. I wasn’t satisfied with this limited selection, so I took matters into my own hands.

In my latest YouTube video, I show you an extremely quick & easy DIY recipe for making your own cleansing balm using USDA certified organic ingredients at home for a fraction of what it would cost you in stores! I walk you through the process of making one in your own kitchen with high-quality ingredients sourced from reputable suppliers because not all ingredients are created equal.

So if you’re looking to get healthy products on a budget press play now to watch the video or keep reading for the recipe!

This project was inspired by one of my absolute favorite products, which is an organic cleansing balm that is made by 100 Percent Pure. This product cost nearly $40 retail in stores or about $13 per ounce. It comes in a 3 oz jar, which has lasted me several months but a look at the simple ingredients list got my wheels turning, and I realized “I can totally make this!” So off I went on a Google and Pinterest spree and here’s the final recipe that I came up with.

ORGANIC CLEANSING BALM RECIPE

Makes approximately 2 oz

Ingredients

1 tbsp organic avocado oil

1 tbsp organic olive oil

1 tbsp organic unrefined coconut oil

1 tbsp USDA organic beeswax pastilles

10-15 drops organic sweet orange essential oil

clean, dark-colored glass jar with lid

  1. Make a double boiler by putting a glass or metal bowl on top of a sauce pot filled with water on medium heat.
  2. Add all the ingredients except the essential oil into the bowl.
  3. Stir with wooden utensil until completely melted. (chopsticks are perfect for this)
  4. Remove from heat.
  5. Add essential oils.
  6. Stir to mix.
  7. Let cool to solidify & enjoy!

Keep in a cool, dry place.

The best part about making your own products at home is that you can even add in different ingredients and customize your balm depending on your needs. For example, you can add some clay to help detox your pores, or soothing calendula/marigold-infused oil and even dried rose petals for added benefits like calming and relaxation.

Not to mention it is an amazing activity to do with the kids because it’s just like cooking. Because the ingredients are organic and even food safe, you don’t have to worry about them harming your kids. And if your kids or anything like mine, then they will love helping mom in the kitchen.

So it’s a total win, win situation if you ask me. Now you see just how quick and easy it is, and even fun to make your own organic cleansing balm at home for a fraction of the cost and have a perfect activity that you can do with the kids. But you might be wondering, I don’t necessarily know how to make all the other products. I like to use like a mascara, my foundation. What about my blush and my lipstick? Well, I actually created a free guide called the Safe Ingredient Rulebook, which you can grab down below, that gives you the step-by-step lowdown on everything that you need to know in order to become a toxin-free product boss.

Cleansing balms are all the rage these days with almost every brand releasing their own version, but the low-quality, highly processed ingredients leave much to be desired especially when they cost upwards of $35-60.

In my latest YouTube video, I show you the top 2 brands of organic cleansing balms that I have personally used to remove makeup better than any makeup wipe, safe or toxic, that I have ever used. No more polyester or polypropylene wipes going into the landfill that don’t biodegrade! YAY! I talk about some key points to know when it comes to using a cleansing balm that’s safe for you, occupational workers making them, and the environment:

  • What is a cleansing balm?
  • What are the benefits of a cleansing balm?
  • What’s usually in an organic cleansing balm and how much do they cost?
  • Why should you use an organic cleansing balm in particular?
  • My top 2 picks for organic cleansing balms

What is a cleansing balm?

You might be wondering what the heck is an organic cleansing balm? Well, it’s actually an oil-based product that is generally solid at room temperature that you can use as part of your skincare routine as a makeup remover and also as a facial cleanser. If you’ve ever heard of the double cleansing method, a cleansing balm is perfect. It’s basically when you use the oil to first remove your makeup then follow up with your favorite toxin-free facial cleanser. My personal favorite is the Pure Haven Refresh Cleanser With Pre+Probiotics.

Benefits of a Cleansing Balm

Cleansing balms can reduce the amount of oil on your face since they contain oil and will bind to oil on your skin. It will also bind dirt and impurities from your pores and moisturize and soften your skin at the same time. So it’s basically an all-in-one product!

I used to use makeup removing cloths, and I felt like I was constantly tugging on my face, and as you get older, you definitely don’t want to be pulling on your skin. The last thing you want to do is to lose elasticity. The good news is a cleansing balm also helps to reduce the impurities in your skin, including pollutants and contaminants from the environment and from the air. What it does is actually bind & remove those contaminants and prevent them from forming free radicals on your skin, which actually cause DNA damage and aging. A cleansing balm is a really great product that you can use as part of your low-tox, organic lifestyle and skincare routine – an absolute must-have!

What’s usually in an organic cleansing balm and how much do they cost?

A cleansing balm is typically a blend of oils with some wax to help it stay solid at room temperature and some essential oils for the aroma therapy and also therapeutic benefits that essential oils have for the skin.

The typical cleansing balm can cost anywhere from $30 to $40 for an organic version. Believe it or not, finding an organic cleansing balm that does not contain isolated fragrance chemicals is quite challenging!

Why should you use an organic cleansing balm in particular?

The issue of pesticides. Pesticides are generally fat soluble or lipophilic, and they’re designed to be this way so that when they’re applied to the plants and crops, they don’t get washed off by the rain or when the crops get watered.

When oils are extracted from these plants, then the pesticides come along with them. Oftentimes pesticides can become concentrated in oils. So that’s why it’s super important to use pure oils, especially essential oils for that reason.

Another thing is that when something is fat-soluble or lipophillic, then it will have a higher rate of absorption through your skin, into your bloodstream. So if you can avoid adding additional pesticides to your daily routine, by using an organic cleansing balm, then that is the way to go.

Not to mention cleansing balms are not meant to be left on the skin necessarily, but you can, if you are looking for something that has a lot of moisture or if you are having really dry or flaky skin, then leaving it on is totally fine. If it’s organic, and you don’t have to worry about the extra load of pesticides. Sounds like a win-win situation, right?

Another reason that you want to use an organic cleansing balm is the issue of consumer safety and toxicity, and also toxicity to the occupational workers who might have to apply toxic herbicides like glyphosate in the fields. But, if you use an organic cleansing balm, then those types of synthetic herbicides are not allowed.

You’re actually helping to protect occupational workers and also the environment by using an organic cleansing balm or any organic product for that matter.

My Top 2 Picks – Organic Cleansing Balms

My absolute favorite organic cleansing balm is made by 100 percent pure. It’s made with simple ingredients like organic avocado, coconut, and olive oils, beeswax, and blood orange essential oil. It has a jelly-like consistency and melts into this dreamy oil when you rub it onto your skin. This stuff removes waterproof makeup extremely easily and doesn’t require tugging, pulling, or rubbing of the skin, which is amazing. It’s on the pricier end of the organic cleansing balm spectrum at $13 per ounce, but well worth it for the high-quality, luxurious ingredients if you ask me. It’s available in their stores or online. My only critique would be the plastic jar. I would love it so much more if the product came in a glass or metal container. Click here to get free shipping on your order!

In 2nd place is Dr. Bronner’s Organic Magic Balm (Baby Unscented). This one is much more affordable at $5 per ounce, comes in a zero-waste aluminum tin, and is readily available at most major retailers and health food stores. It works reasonably well to remove my everyday staple Pure Haven waterproof gel eyeliner, but is definitely more solid at room temperature likely because it contains more wax. Therefore, it took a little more effort to remove my makeup, but given the affordable price and multitude of other uses for dry skin pretty much anywhere on your body and your kids’, this one definitely gets my approval.

How to Use an Organic Cleansing Balm to Remove Waterproof Makeup

I love to use the double cleansing method to get all the makeup off at night. I used to swear by makeup wipes until I realized that they’re non-biodegradable and essentially made of plastic. Not to mention, the ingredients in most makeup removing wipes are insufficient to truly remove makeup. Just ask any makeup artist.

How to double cleanse:

  • Take a bit of the cleansing balm and melt it in palms for a few seconds before gently rubbing it all over face, focusing it on eyes.
  • Wipe away the melted mascara and eyeliner
  • Heat a small wash cloth in some hot running water then ring out.
  • Place towel over your face until it cools.
  • Gently wipe away makeup.
  • Repeat.
  • Follow with your favorite facial cleanser and products.

So now you know all about the benefits, why you should use an organic cleansing balm, and a few examples of great options that are available right now. I hope you try the life-changing double cleansing method!

But you might be wondering what about all the other products that I’m using? Do they have ingredients that I should be concerned with? What if you don’t even know how to read an ingredient label? Well, guess what I created a free guide called the Safe Ingredient Rulebook that will walk you through step-by-step how to become a toxin-free product boss, so you never have to worry about this problem ever again. And you can rest assured that every product that you find will be safe for you, the consumer, the occupational workers who are making all the products and also the environment, because there won’t be the use of synthetic herbicides like glyphosate, AKA Roundup. Therefore, you will be protecting yourself, the workers and the planet. Yay!

What is organic makeup anyway?

It’s actually makeup or cosmetics that are made with wholesome, organically grown plant materials, or they can also be of animal origin. What that means is that organic makeup isn’t necessarily vegan or without animal products.

Beeswax is a perfect example of an animal-derived product that can be USDA Organic certified, which is what you’ll want to look for since the word “organic” on its own is actually not federally regulated. This means that if a product says it’s “organic” it doesn’t really mean much. Always check for the seal!

Why is using organic makeup important?

Well, for starters, it significantly reduces your exposure to certain things like:

  • synthetic fertilizers
  • synthetic pesticides
  • synthetic herbicides
  • inherently non-GMO by law

USDA organic certified ingredients have to meet all four of those criteria.

It’s actually a misconception that organic certified means that there are no pesticides used. It’s simply not true, but what it does mean that synthetic herbicides like glyphosate, cannot be used.

Some of the main benefits of using organic makeup is that you’re then using products made with wholesome, minimally processed ingredients, such as plant extracts, oils, juices, and waxes and butters that actually have proven health benefits for our skin. Not to mention there are significantly less pesticides and herbicides that are used simply because of how the ingredients were grown.

This is important, especially for products that go in and around your mouth.

Why? Because not only are you applying it to your lips, it’s also possibly being ingested and therefore swallowed. So then you would be exposed not only through your skin, not only through your lips, but also through your digestive tract. And it would therefore be more of a systemic exposure.

Always be on the lookout for toxic preservatives.

Preservatives are necessary to maintain the freshness and the stability of your product, so that funguses, bacteria, mold, and yeast don’t grow in the product potentially leading to harmful infections.

The key to remember is that if your product contains water, there must be a preservation system present in order to prevent these types of things from growing and therefore putting you at risk for infection.

Not saying that all preservatives are bad, though. There are certain types that are not microbiome-friendly, which is what we must avoid, and certain kinds of are microbiome-friendly.

When you’re looking for an organic product, especially makeup or anything that you put on your skin for that matter, always be on the lookout for toxic preservatives and ingredients that are going to be harsh and possibly cause irritation or sensitization to your skin.

Another major benefit of using organic makeup is that you are actually helping to prevent occupational toxicity and also toxicity to the environment.

Not only are organic makeup products, safer and healthier for you, the consumer, but they’re also preventing the people in the factories who are making these products from being exposed to toxic intermediates, chemicals and ingredients that go into making a lot of the conventional products that you might see on store shelves.

Furthermore, there won’t be any toxic waste generated that must to be dumped into the environment. Therefore, you’re also helping to protect the environment. That’s why it’s super important to use organic makeup as much as possible for those three reasons. Now I’m going to walk you through step-by-step and show you just how simple it is to find organic makeup on Amazon.

How to Find Affordable Organic Makeup on Amazon

All I did was literally type in the words, “organic makeup” in the search bar. I started scrolling and there a bunch of brands that you would normally see in your conventional stores. I know that those are not organic, so I looked for brands I’ve never heard of before and here’s what I found:

My Tried-and-True Organic Makeup Brands

HAN Skincare Cheek & Lip Tint

This is a multi-stick so you can use it on both your lips and your cheeks. I always recommend going for a product like this, simply because you’re going to get more bang for your buck since you can use it in more than one way.

PRO TIP: anything that is cream-based, must ideally be organic because it’s going to have more of a fat content and, therefore, a higher rate of absorption of anything else that’s in that product simply because the base ingredients are fat soluble.

BaeBlu Organic Cheek Tint
BaeBlu Organic Concealer

One of my absolute favorite organic makeup brands is BaeBlu. Not only are their products mainly organic but also vegan and cruelty-free. The products I’ve tried rival cult favorite MAC, but with zero toxic ingredients!

Brands I Have Not Tried But Contain Healthy, Organic Ingredients

Mom’s Secret 100% Natural Foundation
Fifth & Skin Better’n Ur Skin MINERAL MAKEUP PRIMER
Harvest Natural Beauty – Perfecting Organic Liquid Foundation

I have not tried these products before, but based on the ratings, price point, and of course the ingredients I would try these brands.

And there you have it! Now you see how quick & easy it is to find the best organic makeup on Amazon. You might have to scroll and click through a couple of pages of the results, but I guarantee you it’s worth it!

Now, you might be wondering, well, what about the ingredients in the other products that I’m using? Should I be concerned with those? I created a free guide just for you that outlines step-by-step exactly what you need to do in order to remove toxic products from your life and get healthier and significantly reduce your toxic exposure.
