What is organic makeup anyway?

It’s actually makeup or cosmetics that are made with wholesome, organically grown plant materials, or they can also be of animal origin. What that means is that organic makeup isn’t necessarily vegan or without animal products.

Beeswax is a perfect example of an animal-derived product that can be USDA Organic certified, which is what you’ll want to look for since the word “organic” on its own is actually not federally regulated. This means that if a product says it’s “organic” it doesn’t really mean much. Always check for the seal!

Why is using organic makeup important?

Well, for starters, it significantly reduces your exposure to certain things like:

  • synthetic fertilizers
  • synthetic pesticides
  • synthetic herbicides
  • inherently non-GMO by law

USDA organic certified ingredients have to meet all four of those criteria.

It’s actually a misconception that organic certified means that there are no pesticides used. It’s simply not true, but what it does mean that synthetic herbicides like glyphosate, cannot be used.

Some of the main benefits of using organic makeup is that you’re then using products made with wholesome, minimally processed ingredients, such as plant extracts, oils, juices, and waxes and butters that actually have proven health benefits for our skin. Not to mention there are significantly less pesticides and herbicides that are used simply because of how the ingredients were grown.

This is important, especially for products that go in and around your mouth.

Why? Because not only are you applying it to your lips, it’s also possibly being ingested and therefore swallowed. So then you would be exposed not only through your skin, not only through your lips, but also through your digestive tract. And it would therefore be more of a systemic exposure.

Always be on the lookout for toxic preservatives.

Preservatives are necessary to maintain the freshness and the stability of your product, so that funguses, bacteria, mold, and yeast don’t grow in the product potentially leading to harmful infections.

The key to remember is that if your product contains water, there must be a preservation system present in order to prevent these types of things from growing and therefore putting you at risk for infection.

Not saying that all preservatives are bad, though. There are certain types that are not microbiome-friendly, which is what we must avoid, and certain kinds of are microbiome-friendly.

When you’re looking for an organic product, especially makeup or anything that you put on your skin for that matter, always be on the lookout for toxic preservatives and ingredients that are going to be harsh and possibly cause irritation or sensitization to your skin.

Another major benefit of using organic makeup is that you are actually helping to prevent occupational toxicity and also toxicity to the environment.

Not only are organic makeup products, safer and healthier for you, the consumer, but they’re also preventing the people in the factories who are making these products from being exposed to toxic intermediates, chemicals and ingredients that go into making a lot of the conventional products that you might see on store shelves.

Furthermore, there won’t be any toxic waste generated that must to be dumped into the environment. Therefore, you’re also helping to protect the environment. That’s why it’s super important to use organic makeup as much as possible for those three reasons. Now I’m going to walk you through step-by-step and show you just how simple it is to find organic makeup on Amazon.

How to Find Affordable Organic Makeup on Amazon

All I did was literally type in the words, “organic makeup” in the search bar. I started scrolling and there a bunch of brands that you would normally see in your conventional stores. I know that those are not organic, so I looked for brands I’ve never heard of before and here’s what I found:

My Tried-and-True Organic Makeup Brands

HAN Skincare Cheek & Lip Tint

This is a multi-stick so you can use it on both your lips and your cheeks. I always recommend going for a product like this, simply because you’re going to get more bang for your buck since you can use it in more than one way.

PRO TIP: anything that is cream-based, must ideally be organic because it’s going to have more of a fat content and, therefore, a higher rate of absorption of anything else that’s in that product simply because the base ingredients are fat soluble.

BaeBlu Organic Cheek Tint
BaeBlu Organic Concealer

One of my absolute favorite organic makeup brands is BaeBlu. Not only are their products mainly organic but also vegan and cruelty-free. The products I’ve tried rival cult favorite MAC, but with zero toxic ingredients!

Brands I Have Not Tried But Contain Healthy, Organic Ingredients

Mom’s Secret 100% Natural Foundation
Fifth & Skin Better’n Ur Skin MINERAL MAKEUP PRIMER
Harvest Natural Beauty – Perfecting Organic Liquid Foundation

I have not tried these products before, but based on the ratings, price point, and of course the ingredients I would try these brands.

And there you have it! Now you see how quick & easy it is to find the best organic makeup on Amazon. You might have to scroll and click through a couple of pages of the results, but I guarantee you it’s worth it!

I’m Dr. Yvonne Burkart, a board-certified toxicologist and a mom of two. Today, I want to share my personal journey of overcoming a high toxic load and fertility issues. Growing up, I lived a conventional American lifestyle, consuming regular grocery store foods and using products without questioning their impact on my health. Looking back, I now realize that I wasn’t fine as a kid. I constantly relied on antibiotics, acetaminophen, and had respiratory issues requiring an inhaler.

Things took a turn for the worse during my adolescent and teenage years when my periods became erratic, excruciatingly painful, and lasted for weeks. It was a debilitating time in my life, and the pain often left me in the fetal position on the floor or even passing out. I tried various pain relief products, but they only provided temporary relief without addressing the underlying imbalances in my body.

When I started taking birth control pills, it was the first time I experienced relief. My periods became regular, predictable, and painless. It felt like a miracle. In college, I discovered my passion for toxicology, which led me to study the effects of environmental chemicals on reproductive health during my Ph.D. We focused on how antioxidants, particularly glutathione, could protect the ovaries and testes from toxic insults.

After completing my Ph.D., I joined a research fellowship in the field of reproductive endocrinology and medicine. However, I started missing toxicology and decided to explore other career opportunities. That’s when I found a job in the flavor and fragrance industry, which unexpectedly felt like a perfect fit. Moving to Ohio for the job, I left behind friends and family, and although excited initially, the stress gradually overwhelmed me.

I was constantly anxious, unable to switch off from work even outside office hours. My life became centered around my job, and the initial excitement faded away. As a result, my health began to suffer. I developed acne, experienced severe brain fog, digestive issues, fatigue, and sleep disturbances. It was the lowest point in my life, coinciding with studying for board certification and planning an out-of-state wedding.

During this time, my periods disappeared for nearly ten months. Despite seeking medical advice, the conventional approach didn’t provide any satisfactory answers. Eventually, I discovered I was pregnant, even though I hadn’t been having regular periods. However, my joy was short-lived as subsequent medical examinations revealed that the pregnancy didn’t progress.

Feeling desperate, I knew I needed to explore alternatives. That’s when I stumbled upon functional medicine, which became a turning point in my life. I made significant lifestyle changes, including dietary adjustments, stress management through journaling, meditation, and yoga. Within three months, my period returned, and my energy levels soared. It was a transformative experience.

As I approached 35 years old, the pressure to conceive intensified. Despite trying for a baby, I faced disappointment month after month. It was then that my functional doctor discovered elevated mercury levels in my body, likely resulting from the amalgam fillings I had for many years. I learned the importance of proper dental care and sought the help of a biological dentist to safely remove the fillings and detoxify from mercury exposure.

After about nine months of working with my functional doctor, I finally became pregnant. It was an exhilarating yet nerve-wracking time, given my previous pregnancy loss. However, I had faith in my body’s strength and intuition. Thankfully, my pregnancy progressed smoothly, and I ultimately gave birth to two beautiful children without any medical interventions.

This entire journey taught me a crucial lesson: our environment plays a significant role in our health. Despite my scientific background, it was challenging to acknowledge the impact of toxins on my body and fertility. I realized the need to embrace a low tox lifestyle. Contrary to what some might think, it doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated.

Simple changes like removing shoes indoors, opening windows for fresh air, cooking whole foods, avoiding processed foods, minimizing skincare products, and reducing makeup usage can make a world of difference. Even without fancy equipment or expensive treatments, I’ve experienced remarkable improvements in my health and well-being.

Today, as a toxicologist and a mother, I’m passionate about spreading awareness of the importance of reducing our toxic load. Our bodies have an incredible ability to heal and thrive when given the right environment and support. I hope my story inspires others to take control of their health and consider the impact of toxins in their daily lives.

The Dark Side of Chemical Filters

Chemical filters like oxybenzone, avobenzone, and octinoxate have long been used in sunscreens. However, recent studies have raised concerns about their potential toxicity. Oxybenzone, a common sunscreen ingredient and endocrine disruptor, has been found to interfere with hormone systems, leading to reproductive issues, hormone imbalances, and even cancer. The European Union Scientific Committee for Consumer Safety has highlighted the health risks associated with these chemical filters. Moreover, these chemicals do not easily wash off when we swim or sweat, resulting in their absorption into our bodies and potential long-term damage.

Environmental Impact and Body Accumulation

Disturbingly, these chemical filters are not only harmful to our bodies but also have adverse effects on the environment. Up to 97% of people have detectable levels of oxybenzone in their urine, indicating its presence in their bodies. Sunscreen is recommended for daily and frequent use, including on children as young as six months old. However, children are particularly vulnerable to toxic substances, and their exposure to harmful chemicals should be minimized. Sun protection shouldn’t come at the cost of introducing toxins that negate the benefits and potentially cause long-term harm.

Safe Alternatives

Mineral Sunscreens Fortunately, there are low-toxicity alternatives available that effectively protect our skin from the sun without compromising our health. Mineral sunscreens, also known as physical sunscreens, create a physical barrier on the skin’s surface, deflecting harmful rays. Non-nano mineral sunscreen ingredients, such as zinc oxide, are considered safe as they do not absorb into the bloodstream through the skin. These alternatives offer adequate sun protection without the potential environmental and human health concerns associated with chemical filters.

Safety Tips for Choosing Low-Tox Sunscreens

  1. Avoid aerosol sunscreens to minimize inhalation risks and ensure even application.
  2. Steer clear of synthetic UV chemical filters, including avobenzone, homosalate, and oxybenzone.
  3. Say no to fragrance or scented sunscreens, as they may contain endocrine disruptors, carcinogens, or allergens.

The Importance of Reading Ingredient Labels

Always read the ingredients list of sunscreen products thoroughly, paying attention to both active and inactive ingredients. Some manufacturers may include potentially harmful substances, such as Butyloctyl salicylate, that bear similarities to other sunscreen chemicals with toxic concerns. By being conscious of the ingredients, you can make healthier choices for yourself and future generations.

Toxicologist Reacts to Hailey Bieber’s Skin Care and Makeup Routine

In a recent video posted on the Vogue YouTube channel, Hailey Bieber shared her beauty and skincare routine, revealing some of her favorite products. As a Board-Certified Toxicologist and advocate for reducing toxic exposure, I’ll provide insights on the ingredients used in Hailey’s routine and highlight any potential concerns for consumers. Remember, this analysis is for educational purposes, and it’s essential to do your own research to find the best skincare options for you.

In my latest YouTube video, I react to Hailey Bieber’s skincare routine and her very own Rhode Skincare brand.

Here’s what you’ll learn:

  • Which of Hailey Bieber’s skincare products contain questionable 🚩ingredients
  • How I feel about her Rhode Skincare line
  • Low tox dupes for these cult classics to get you glowing without the dose of toxicants! (Links in the blog post below and the Description for the video)

Toner

Hailey uses an Environ toner, which contains several ingredients. For a simpler alternative, I recommend using plain rosewater, such as Cocokind’s USDA certified organic rosewater toner. It consists of just rosewater with a touch of preservative to maintain freshness. This minimalistic option, available at Target and online, can be a healthier choice.

Peptide Glazing Fluid and Barrier Restore Cream

The peptide glazing fluid Hailey uses contains synthetic thickeners derived from petroleum. These thickeners may undergo processes involving carcinogens, leading to potential contamination. While the long-term health risks of such ingredients are uncertain, it’s worth considering alternatives with more wholesome and minimally processed ingredients. Earth Harbor offers a low-toxic organic peptide serum that avoids synthetic thickeners like carbomer.

Occlusive Patches and Eye Cream

Hailey applies silicone sheets as occlusives to enhance product penetration. However, this technique can increase the risk of toxic absorption if the underlying product contains harmful ingredients. I recommend using organic and low-toxic skincare options, like the Herbivore Nova eye cream, especially when using occlusive layers like these Pacifica Reusable Undereye Masks.

Foundation and Concealer

Hailey’s Chanel foundation includes glycols, synthetic petroleum derivatives with higher risks compared to plant-derived ingredients. Fragrances in cosmetics can contain various chemicals, including phthalates, and provide no functional benefits. Choosing fragrance-free options is advisable. Kosas offers a cleaner concealer, while 100% Pure provides an organic alternative that is Dr. Yvonne Approved.

Powders and Palettes

Talc, a common ingredient in powders, carries the risk of asbestos contamination, a carcinogen. Brands like Tom Ford and Dior use talc and synthetic vinyl-like ingredients, making them less safe choices. Opting for 100% Pure’s food-based powder ingredients or other low-toxic brands can be a better option.

HAN Skincare Cosmetics eyeshadows are another great option!

Eyebrow Products

Some Anastasia Beverly Hills eyebrow products contain parabens, which may activate breast cancer genes. Look for low-toxic alternatives like Plume, known for its amazing brow pomade and refillable brow pencil.

Mascara and Lip Products

MAC and Dior mascaras, as well as the Rhode lip treatment, contain synthetic and potentially harmful ingredients. Avoiding toxins in lip products is key to reducing your toxic load since some is ingested.

Switching to cleaner options like Lily Lolo Mascara, Plume Mascara, or FitGlow Beauty Lip Colour Serum, and FitGlow Overnight Lip Mask can provide safer alternatives.

Conclusions

While Hailey Bieber’s routine has room for improvement, she did make cleaner choices with certain products.

Key considerations include avoiding talc, synthetic thickeners, and fragrances. Opting for products with organic and minimally processed ingredients can be beneficial. Remember to read ingredient labels and do your own research.
